pick.im - a startup in the open

Tools for Freelancers

My friend Andrew Hyde is pursuing a new venture in addition to all the other awesome things he does. It’s called: pick.im. He’s putting together some tools for the freelance market. If you’re a freelancer or small services business, you’ll want to keep an eye out on what he’s doing.

Openness
One fun aspect of his project: he’s decided to be very open about it. He’s started a blog where you can follow along. It’s should be fun to watch.

Also on twitter as: @yeahpick

Oh, and I might have had a little something to do with the logo… hehe.

boco

A Mountain Conference about the best things in Tech, Music & Food.

Today I had the privilege of speaking at Andrew Hyde’s new conference, boco. My Backstage business parter, Reid Phillips and I gave a super-short, but hopefully super-awesome talk on the state of the music industry, and specifically, how change is a constant force in any industry.

I unfortunately had a crazy day and couldn’t attend the conference in its entirety, but what I did participate in was fantastic. Andrew has such a knack for bringing together interesting groups of people. I left with the reminder of how important it is to constantly push ourselves into new areas. It’s easy for all of us to stay in our own little interest-area groups. I loved Andrew’s format of mixing tech with music and food. I hope this is the first year of a long-standing Boulder event.

Making the Joy Video

Crafting a live music video sans budget.

Earlier this year, my friend Andrew Hyde and I worked on a video for the band, The Autumn Film. Before going further, check out the video. In this post, I’ll go over some of the behind the scenes: a making of, of sorts.

30-Sec Biker

My Current Desktop

30-Sec Biker

This might sound a bit conceited, but it takes a lot to get me to use someone else’s photo as my desktop background. This is my current laptop desktop. It’s a 30-second exposure taken by my friend Andrew Hyde as he followed a fellow fixie rider through the streets of Boulder. What a fantastic effect! Click through to his flickr account for the full image.

UPDATE: if you have a comment about the photo itself, be sure to click through to Andrew’s flickr account and leave it for him there.

Joy

A Video by The Autumn Film

I’m super-excited to be able to post this video to my blog. I directed/edited it and, along with my buddy Andrew Hyde, shot the footage.

I’ll have a post later this week that goes into much more detail on how we made the video, but for now, just give it a watch and enjoy it.

The singer is Tifah from the band, The Autumn Film. The song is an old public-domain song that she rewrote and added a bridge to. We shot it in her living room with bandmate Dann Stockton recording sound.

Free Music
As they’ve been known to do, the band is giving this video away for free, along with an audio track of the song and two other brand new songs. You can download it (and 8 other songs of there’s) at theautumnfilm.com/share.

If you enjoy it, tell your friends. That’s the whole point.

Letterpress Poster Printing

with Mikey Burton

My friend Andrew Hyde recently visited a local letterpress shop and shot some fun video of the printing process.

Then I ran across this video of Mikey Burton typesetting and letterpress printing some posters. It’s fun to watch the process. Be sure to check out his excellent design and illustration work too.

On an at&t Fail.

Andrew Hyde commenting on the horrendous at&t phone service issues caused by the descent of 4000-ish hipster-geeks and their iPhones on SXSWi.

It’s like they didn’t even think this might happen…

I’ve never seen such a failure from a phone company caused by 4000 hipsters. A group of hipsters, on record, has not been able to achieve anything in the past five years (known fact). How did they do so much damage?

Ignite! Boulder 3

Armbands FTW!

Ignite! Boulder 3

I guess I’m a bit late in posting about this, but this month has flown by. The 3rd Ignite Boulder was held on the 18th. My buddy Reid (@gomortichi) & I were privileged enough to do a presentation on the music industry. It was a lot of fun, and a bit humbling amongst all the amazing presentation talent.

I’m not sure who took this photo (Andrew’s camera got passed around a bit), but if you know, hit me up in the comments section.

It’s always interesting to watch the evolution of a social network. The early Twitter adopters are starting to grumble. And they have good points.

Now you have authority. Or so you think. Now you are important. Or so you think. Now you are a spammer. Or so I think.

Welcome Twitter, the MySpace.

Ignite!

The post where I reflect on my first Ignite Boulder.

Despite the fact that we didn’t get to actually ignite anything on fire (maybe next time?), I throughly enjoyed last night’s Ignite Boulder.

The Premise: Presentations, “with a twist.” Each presentation (on a variety of topics) has 20 slides that advance automatically, each 15 seconds.

The presentations were interesting, informative, and best of all: funny. I was really impressed with the presenters (I hadn’t expected people to fly in from across the country to present), and also incredibly impressed with the job Andrew Hyde and his crew did to make the event happen.

I got to meet a bunch of fun people. Some whom I’d followed on Twitter for a while, and others I’ll now hopefully keep in touch with.
