User-Interaction Fail

How not to sell digital media online.

For this week’s design post, another video. I take you through a recent online purchase I made and point out some serious stumbling blocks in the user-interaction design. Do people test these things?

HDR Run Amuck.

Let’s talk tools. I’ll try to keep this one short because the point really isn’t to dump on HDR in general, but to remind everyone of a simple concept: just because you have a tool at your disposal doesn’t mean you have to use it.

Fade-in Images

On Blake Allen’s Excellent Site.

I’m trying something new this week. I found a great little ui/ux design touch that was easier to show than talk about or do a screenshot of.

Blake Allen (blakeallendesign.com) has added a nice touch to the large images on his site in both his blog and portfolio sections. As you scroll down the page, newly appearing images fade-in just as they become visible.

The little things matter. Adding subtle motion-design to your site enhances the user experience. In Blake’s case, it took me a while to notice exactly what he was doing, but I was aware that something was different, and I liked it.

Expect to see a lot more motion or interaction touches like this in the coming year. It’s definitely a trend.

Delicious Design for the iPhone

I am trying to get back into the swing of writing these Wednesday design posts. I don’t know that many of you even read them, but it’s a good exercise for me and makes me think differently and view my work (and others) through a different lens. That said, I thought I’d ease myself into the new year with a post on somebody else’s work: Weighbot, the deliciously-designed weight tracking program for the iPhone.

This app is slick. I had read a review at one point saying this app was not only gorgeously designed, but had excellent ui design as well, so I thought I’d check it out.

BRB…

I’m busy recovering from the holidays, closing down one year and organizing things for the next. I’ll be back to writing with a new design post on the 14th.

Until then, make some design declarations for you new year, build your portfolio up a bit, make a winter-themed iPhone Wallpaper, check out some web and identity design, or simply curl up in front of a fire with some hot chocolate.

See you in 2009!

Build A Better Portfolio

For those just getting started.

Maybe you’re just out of school (or even better, still in school). Or maybe you’ve been pursuing a design career for a while, but are trying to break into other areas. From my own experience, here are some ways to begin build out your portfolio and gain some valuable experience.

Design Declarations

It’s almost the new year. Make some declarations about your work.

  1. Create useful (and usable) work.
  2. Adhere to simplicity.
  3. Embrace constraints.
  4. Teach.
  5. Be brief (brevity is powerful).
  6. Seek influence outside your medium.
  7. Practice storytelling.
  8. Design your life.
  9. Now, break the rules.

Paper Tree

A holiday/winter-themed iPhone Wallpaper to ward off my own scrooginess.

Ok, so, I’m not a big winter fan. And while I love my family and friends dearly, the craziness of the holidays often gets to me.

Solution: a bit of holiday cheer on my iPhone screen.

In this week’s design entry, I’ll give you a brief tutorial on creating a fun little iPhone Wallpaper that a friend aptly named: Paper Tree.

It’s About the Details

A one-page micro-store we launched for The Autumn Film this week.

It’s a simple concept: set sale prices on products you want to move and send out an email to your list promoting said products.

But this is a noisy space during the holiday season. How do you stand out? For band, The Autumn Film, we created The Red+White Sale and launched a branded single-page micro-store and accompanying email campaign.

I’ll take you through the finished design and point out some of the philosophy behind the decisions I made.

Oh, did I forget to mention we put this together in two days?
