Ben Michael Ward responding to Microsoft’s Response to the Fix Outlook campaign that made the rounds a couple weeks ago. He makes some great (and humorous) points.

What I don’t understand is why MS responded at all. This is PR 101: a company should not ever respond to some sort of public disgruntlement with uninformed tripe (or blatant lies). They’re better off staying silent.

Please, Mr Kennedy, how come my Mac isn’t a mange-ridden whore-house of cross-site-email-virus sluttery? Because mail clients use regular, modern rendering engines but do not execute JavaScript. You dick.

because there are already enough ways to kill your idea

from Showoff Films

Showoff Films created a set of illustrations depicting ways that “creatives” get their ideas killed. I don’t usually have to deal with a catankerous creative director since that’s me, but I really identified with the two above.

Click through to The Inspiration Room for the rest of them. Really fun.

The Gmail Obsession

Let me get this out of the way: For what it is, Gmail is amazing.

That said, I’ve never fully understood the obsession with it. In my book, it doesn’t beat a multi-account-checking, OS-native interface wearing, good old-fashion desktop-side email client.

In talking to people, I think a lot of it comes from their unfortunate exposure to Outlook/Entourage and their ignorance to the availability of other options. Email clients don’t have to suck people. And they don’t have to be in your browser.

(via Daring Fireball)

“If you’re still tied to a desktop app—whether Outlook, the Mac’s Mail program, or anything else that sees your local hard drive, rather than a Web server, as its brain—then you’re doing it wrong.”

Well, I’m convinced. I guess I’ll just switch to an email client that doesn’t allow me to drag a goddamn file into the message to attach it.

7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable

  1. We don’t have enough annoying strangers in our lives.
  2. We don’t have enough annoying friends, either.
  3. Texting is a shitty way to communicate.
  4. Online company only makes us lonelier.
  5. We don’t get criticized enough.
  6. We’re victims of the Outrage Machine.
  7. We feel worthless, because we actually are worth less.

A very insightful article. I think there’s a level of truth in each of his 7. Isolated, I don’t know that these things are actually making us miserable, but the way we handle them certainly can.

I would add a #8: On the whole, I think our culture yearns for simplicity, but places marketing ($$) value on complexity. We needlessly complicate a lot that we do with technology.

How to write an email that generates a useful response

I suck at #1

I’m not usually a big GTD-type, but this post caught my eye. She has some useful thoughts on, well, making email more useful, for all of us.
