The Sandpit

by Sam O’Hare

I’m such a sucker for these kinds of short films. This one takes a slightly different look at New York City. No skylines, no subways, or any of the cliché landmarks. For some reason it makes the lives that are being filmed seem more real or human.

Check it out on Vimeo for HD or get some more information in an interview with the filmmaker. He put over 35,000 still images into this thing. Amazing.

In the Air

by Ryan Booth

I love this short from Ryan Booth that he shot out of an airplane window. Also, read the accompanying blog post Airplane Quiet and check out the photos with it. I love the color and tone of them and his remarks on flying.

“We are miles up in the air hurtling at nearly 700 feet per second. Even though air travel is relatively routine for us, the reality is that I am engaging in an activity that only the smallest fraction of humans have ever been able to do. I am seeing clouds in a way that almost no one has seen them. I am traveling faster than most human beings have ever traveled.” ~Airplane Quiet

A Time Lapse Journey Through Japan

A gorgeous short film by Brad Kremer. I love that it gets out of the city, into the countryside, for a view of Japan that I don’t often see. The harbor scene at dusk/night is especially fantastic. Be sure to click through to the Vimeo page for more info and the HD version.

Cappuccino

at Intelligentsia

I thought I posted about this video series before, but I can’t find the post. I’m not a coffee drinker, myself, but these short videos filmed at Intelligentsia in Los Angeles are fascinating. They’re beautiful and artfully done by Department of the 4th Dimension.

Three have been released so far. This one, on the Cappuccino, one on the Espresso, and another on making straight, black coffee with a Syphon.

Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer

Brilliantly done. The trailer “template” for pretty much every academy award winning movie, ever.

Beautiful time-lapse videos filmed over 5 days and nights in Dubai. Philip talks more about the shoot in this article.

PUSH PULL

by Landis Fields

This short film is gorgeous. It follows Pete Billington, friend of filmmaker Landis Fields. The whole thing was shot on Canon SLR cameras: “The entire film was shot on 2 canon 7D’s (mostly at 60p for “slow-mo” flexibility later on while editing) and 1 Canon 5D at 30p which was conformed to a 24 frame timeline.” Crazy awesome.

The Movie Title Stills Collection

by Christian Annyas

I love movie title design. I really want to design a movie opening sequence someday, but until then, I’ll stare at this gorgeous collection of movie titles compiled by designer Christian Annyas.

Stargate Studios Reel

I’ve long been interested in special effects, digital compositing, CGI, etc. There’s something really fun about knowing how things have been pulled off.

At the same time, the film industry is getting so good, that I’m starting to find myself disappointed when I learn that a fairly benign scene (a.k.a. not obviously an f/x scene) wasn’t actually shot on location. It feels like cheating.

That said, this reel is amazing. You have to watch it closely to catch everything, but wow. And there’s some good background info on Stargate over at the Vimeo page.

Solitude

a universal feeling

“A long journey in solitude searching for hope.
A film that communicates in a esthetic pictures poetry and emotion, to explore a new experience in Cinemato Graphy.”

I’m enamored with this short film by Robin RIsser. Shot in the Charente region of France, the locations are enchanting and varied. The “filming” was done on a Canon 5d Mark II, and the attention to detail is amazing.

Hecq Vs Exillion: Spheres Of Fury

by Tim Brown & Christopher Hewitt

I’m not even sure how to describe this epic music video. You just have to watch, full screen, with the sound on. Really well done.

I caught this trailer on the idsgn blog where they have some more background info on the project by Erik Proulx. It looks like a powerful film.

The Man Who Walked Around the World

The History of Johnnie Walker

Basically an extended commercial for spirits brand, Johnnie Walker, this short film, directed by Jamie Rafn and narrated by actor Robert Carlyle is so well executed, I couldn’t resist posting it. I would absolutely love to see a “Behind the Scenes” or “Making Of”. I keep watching it over and over trying to see how much is straight-forward filmmaking and how much is special effects trickery. Regardless, it seems to be shot in one single take. It’s beautiful.

Niagara Falls in Motion

A gorgeous little short film. And I think this is the first d90 footage I’ve see, personally. Really beautiful. It seems to stack up to the 5d Mark ii well.

Fireworks

by Ryan Booth

At first glance, I thought this was a cool video, but when I clicked through to Vimeo and watched it in HD, full-screen on my big monitor, it was simply mesmerizing.

What a unique view of fireworks. Ryan talks a bit about it on his blog.

Making the Joy Video

Crafting a live music video sans budget.

Earlier this year, my friend Andrew Hyde and I worked on a video for the band, The Autumn Film. Before going further, check out the video. In this post, I’ll go over some of the behind the scenes: a making of, of sorts.

Joy

A Video by The Autumn Film

I’m super-excited to be able to post this video to my blog. I directed/edited it and, along with my buddy Andrew Hyde, shot the footage.

I’ll have a post later this week that goes into much more detail on how we made the video, but for now, just give it a watch and enjoy it.

The singer is Tifah from the band, The Autumn Film. The song is an old public-domain song that she rewrote and added a bridge to. We shot it in her living room with bandmate Dann Stockton recording sound.

Free Music
As they’ve been known to do, the band is giving this video away for free, along with an audio track of the song and two other brand new songs. You can download it (and 8 other songs of there’s) at theautumnfilm.com/share.

If you enjoy it, tell your friends. That’s the whole point.

Where the Wild Things Are

The first trailer for the upcoming film.

A while back I posted some frame-captures from the upcoming movie by director Spike Jonze. Now the first trailer is out.

It seems like they carried the distinct visual tone of the frame-captures throughout the film in a really effective way.

I’m also loving the titling and hope that’s carried through into the film titles.

Do we really have to wait for October 16th?

Forever’s Not So Long

a short film.

Forever’s Not So Long

Normally I’d post a video in the video section, but after watching Garrett Murray’s short film Forever’s Not So Long I thought it was so beautifully shot that it deserved to be recognized for the imagery. Click through to Vimeo to watch it in HD goodness.

Murray, who stars in and also produced the film, said it was shot, “on a Panasonic HVX-200a, with a Cinevate 35mm lens adapter… using the Nikon 50mm 1.8 and 28mm 2.8 primes.” The camera was set to 720p in 24p mode. Shawn Morrison wrote and directed it.

You have 13 minutes. Go watch it.
