Wesley, who runs Family Records, has some great ideas in his article set in the not-to-distant future. I’d love to see a lot of this stuff happen in one for or another.

I got to meet Verhoeve through Spencer Fry one night in NYC back in January and was really impressed with his sense of the music industry and where stuff will hopefully be heading.

…5 minutes later the album has downloaded to my Apple Music Locker^ in the cloud… I switch… to iTunes on my phone and start playing the album from the cloud. Once I get to my apartment I switch to iTunes on my computer and continue playing it.

Light Outside

by Wakey!Wakey!

I first saw this band when I was spending a week in New York with the Carbonmade team. I liked them a lot live, and then fell in love with their new album released the next month. This is one of my favorite songs from Almost Everything I Wish I’d Said The Last Time I Saw You (and an excellent music video, as well).

The Ship and The Sea Artwork

Part 2

The Ship and The Sea Artwork

This is a followup post to the first half of the illustration from a few weeks ago.

My friends, The Autumn Film recently released their latest full-length album, The Ship and The Sea. I had the honor of putting together all of visual packaging (and web presence) for the new album.

ps – in full disclosure, not only are these guys a client, but I make a teensy-weensy amount of money on each album purchased through their websites since they use Backstage for their online store. More importantly: the band makes a lot more money if you buy directly from them rather than through iTunes or Amazon etc.

“…indie music is like a dog whistle…” is one of my new favorite lines (and I like indie music).

What I did not want to be was a pretentious, smug critic who writes year end reviews for famous magazine where you make not so much a list of albums you loved, but a sampling of bands and songs that prove your indie cred and show just how smart and hip you are… Those reviews make me wonder if indie music is like a dog whistle and you can only hear it if you’re wearing an oversized sweater, black rimmed glasses and a permanent, ironic smile.

Everytime I Go To Sleep

by Holly Miranda

Live, recorded in one take with an ambient mic. My friend, Micah told me about Holly Miranda yesterday after discovering her at SXSW. It’s a beautiful little video, and I’m currently enjoying her new album, The Magician’s Private Library.

‘I’m Not Interested’

He’s speaking about Lady Gaga, but I think the quote is generally true.

I like pop culture. But to me, even if it’s popular, there is a quality in the music you have to be able to appreciate. And I don’t see it.

Jónsi Live Show

by 59 Productions

The band Sigur Rós is known for having amazing live shows, but their lead singer, Jónsi, seems to be taking it up another notch for the tour supporting his new solo album. He’s hired a production company out of London that typically builds sets and designs lighting for theatrical products, not music live shows. What they’re working on looks amazing.

The Ship and The Sea

A new album by The Autumn Film

My friends (and clients) The Autumn Film have released their second full-length album: The Ship and The Sea.

I’ve gotten to work on the album packaging and their online presence, including this nifty little micro-site.

If you haven’t given the album a listen yet, you have until the end of the day to stream the entire thing from theshipandthesea.com, so you have no excuses, check it out.

This image is part of the packaging, but you’re only seeing half of it. I’ll post the other half at a later date.

The band is streaming the entire album from theshipandthesea.com this week, so be sure to check it out.

Ships on the Ocean Floor

a preview from The Autumn Film

I’ve had the pleasure of listening to The Autumn Film’s new album, “The Ship and The Sea”, for the last month or so as they’ve been finishing up final mixing and getting it in to mastering. They’re friends of mine, so this will probably sound biased, but I’m truly enjoying this album and excited to see other people hear it for the first time.

This song previewed in this video, Ships on the Ocean Floor is one of my favorites. You can also hear the first two songs off the album in their entirety over on The Sixty One.

I’m currently hard at work finishing up the artwork for the album packaging, which I’ll of course post here once it’s ready.

If you like what you hear, pre-order the album and help spread the word: theshipandthesea.com. The album is out on March 5th.

Go Do

from “Go” by Jónsi

This is the first official music video for Jónsi’s new album. Just like Boy Lilikoi, the track he was giving away for a while, Go Do is simply gorgeous and fun. In a very non-EMI-like move, you can download the full video from the Vimeo page.

The album is out on April 6th.

Poison & Wine

by The Civil Wars

Props to Joshua Blankenship for posting and thus reminding me of this amazing video. I don’t know when I first saw it, but I remember thinking it was one of the most captivating and haunting music videos I’d seen in a while. Unlike a lot of videos it enhanced the story of the song, Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars

The short film was produced & directed by Becky Fluke.

Joy Williams, one half of The Civil Wars duo (and I name I keep hearing more and more about) says this about the song:

“Poison & Wine is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love—that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. JP [John Paul White] and I are both married have been for several years now – and we got to talking one day about what a tug and pull our individual relationships can be. The longer you know someone—and the longer you allow someone to know you—the more the light and shadows inside each person become more vivid. This song was our attempt at being as brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known.

I agree. I get tired of hearing the (somewhat new) argument that Apple ruined the music industry. Music sales in general were absolutely tanking before the iTunes store and Apple solved a problem that no one else had been able to solve to that point: how to get people to buy music online. Today, many people I talk to would rather buy online than steal online because purchasing is easier. The caveat? Apple did it their way. Tough cookies. Change it if you don’t like it.

Music industry executives may well not like what’s happened to their industry, but is it really bullying from Apple? Or isn’t it simply that Apple does not do what the music executives wish? That Apple runs its music store its own way? What the music industry really doesn’t like is the whole idea of downloads. They want to go back to selling $18 discs. Pre-iTunes, “music downloads” were pretty much all free bootlegs.

“Go” by Jónsi

Coming in March

This began making rounds a couple days ago: Jónsi, lead singer of the Icelandic band, Sigur Rós has been working on a solo project that will be released next March.

I was excited just by that idea, but then I went to his website to grab Boy Lilikoi, a track from the album that he’s giving away, and now I’m ecstatic. The song is fun, in English (not Icelandic or Hopelandic), and the orchestration is amazing (the press release from the band’s manager mentioned that Jónsi’s been working with Nico Muhly, which make me very happy).

The lyric, “you grind your claws, you howly growl,” gives me chills on each listen. Why is March so far away?

Oh, Starling’s Joy Giveaway

Can you believe it’s time for Christmas Music?

I can’t believe Thanksgiving is this week. Seriously, that shit snuck up on me big-time. Seeing as how it’s about that time of year for holiday music, I thought I’d highlight some friends, Dan Craig and Jessica Sonner who have released an EP of Christmas music. It’s called Joy and under their new duo-banner: Oh, Starling.

It’s free right now, but look for that to change later this week, so grab it while you can and tell your friends.
