I think he’s right. A lot of consumers are now looking for craft, longevity, sustainability, and, in a general sense, quality in the products they buy. I’m not usually a fan of romanticizing the past, but in this case natural materials and good craftsmanship often trump shoddy fabrication and synthetics—and more people are starting to seek items produced in this fashion.

There is a resurgence in discovering or rediscovering heritage brands of late — the craftspeople who create items in what’s considered old-fashioned methods: by hand with simpler tools as old as the business itself and with materials that respect the world in which they inhabit.

This is good design.

Where are the useful apps?

Let me preface this article by saying this: anyone I pick on, as an example, is just that: an example. We need you to keep working on the amazing things you’re working on. I’m only asking one simple question, for the sake of discussion: where do we go from here?

The next best…

Saying that interesting things are happening in the new app space (web, iPhone, or otherwise) is a bit like saying that cats enjoy chasing balls of yarn. It’s so cliché that, well, it’s not even cliché. It’s boring. Everyone is working on, “the next best (fill in the blank).” “The next best…” what? YouTube? Do we need another one of those? Twitter? A twitter app? A mashup that entices me to post on your new version of MySpace by also pushing my updates to Facebook? Do we need another Basecamp? How about another Digg? But just for designers?

Long, but brilliant read.

Bonus: “Now we seem to be entering a new era based on measurement. The reason the new model has advanced so rapidly is that it works so much better.”

So all other things being equal, a society consisting of more, smaller organizations will care less about credentials.
