Cole Rise

Cole Rise

I’ve had Cole’s site sitting open on my laptop for weeks. Every so often I scroll back through it again just to take in the images. They’re deceptively simple. When you look closely, you can tell they’re highly-crafted in post. He also plays with a lot of texture. It doesn’t always work for me, but when it does, it’s powerful.

He shares a lot of b-side and in-progress photos on his blog as well, so be sure to check that out. This fifty & two thirds post, for example, has two of my new favorite photos.

Remembering Anchorage in the Seventies

by Stephen Cysewski

Remembering Anchorage in the Seventies

This entire photoset by Stephen Cysewski is amazing. It makes me not simply want to visit Anchorage, but wish I could go back in time and visit it in that very specific period. It looks rough, at times dreary, but at the edge of a frontier: a life without pretense. It draws me in and makes me want to craft the stories that go behind the photos.

Be sure to check out his blog and flickr for a lot of other wonderful photos.

maxine

This is Maxine, my grandmother, my dad’s mother. I’ve always loved this photo I took of her on a trip back to Ohio in 2008 and I’m really excited that it was chosen to be part of Pictory’s latest showcase: Life Lessons.

hello mopho

Just over a year ago I started a little photo project that I then called, Daily Interestingness. Well, at this point it’s not always daily, but still going strong.

I’ve moved it to its own site (instead of a flickr set) under the title: hello mopho.

Some of my recent favorites are above.

Flatirons

by Ryan Behner

Flatirons

My friend Ryan took this last week. This is why we live here. This is why I feel so lucky to have found this place.

The spot the photo was taken is off of CO-93, just south of the town of Boulder. Eldorado Canyon (a state park, known for its rock climbing) is on the very left of the photo, Bear Peak (one of my favorite in-town hikes is the tallest visible peak, and the town itself starts just of the ridge, out of sight, on the right side of the photograph.

See more of Ryan’s photos on his photo blog or click the photo to head over to his flickr.

Bolder Boulder 2007

relief

In honor of today. The Bolder Boulder tends to mark the beginning of summer here in town. It’s one of the largest running races in the country and the sea of people through downtown is an impressive sight.

I took this photo a couple years ago when I was still making time for my camera.

Ole Martin is an excellent designer. He recently started taking photos and using a simple microsite to display them. He has a great eye and I love his post-processing.

The two featured above are Opera Wall Pattern and My Neighborhood.

Evil Forces & Iceland Under Construction

by Skarphéðinn Þráinsson

Evil Forces & Iceland Under Construction

I’m enamored with photos of the volcano that is currently erupting in Iceland. I think it’s the juxtaposition of the ice and fire that makes it so interesting.

Be sure to check out Skarphéðinn’s full set on flickr.

The Ship and The Sea Artwork

Part 2

The Ship and The Sea Artwork

This is a followup post to the first half of the illustration from a few weeks ago.

My friends, The Autumn Film recently released their latest full-length album, The Ship and The Sea. I had the honor of putting together all of visual packaging (and web presence) for the new album.

ps – in full disclosure, not only are these guys a client, but I make a teensy-weensy amount of money on each album purchased through their websites since they use Backstage for their online store. More importantly: the band makes a lot more money if you buy directly from them rather than through iTunes or Amazon etc.

This image is part of the packaging, but you’re only seeing half of it. I’ll post the other half at a later date.

The band is streaming the entire album from theshipandthesea.com this week, so be sure to check it out.

Explosion

by Ryan Behner

Explosion

I think Ryan experiments more than any other photographer I know, to great results. A shot like this makes you simply say: “wow”. For the record, I’m pretty sure that’s a self-portrait. Correction: it’s not him. He was lying down in the snow to take the shot.

Be sure to check out his long-running photo-blog: Ghostman on Third.

turn right for jamestown

turn right for jamestown

Thanks to some snow the last couple days, we’re actually experiencing a white Christmas here in Colorado. I didn’t take this photo today, but it felt appropriate.

The photo itself is from the curving road up Lefthand Canyon, just north of Boulder, on the way to Ward (if you stay left) or Jamestown (if you veer right). Back when I used to be heavily into cycling it was a staple of many mountain ride routes.

Mount Evans Rainbow

Mount Evans Rainbow

I was looking for something the other day and ran across this scan. According to the file, I scanned it back in 2002, but I think I took the photo sometime in the nineties, when I was in middle school.

It’s not that great of a photo technically-speaking, but it’s personally significant. Mount Evans was one of the first places that I really connected with when my family moved out to Colorado. Coming from the East Coast, it’s a huge part of the beginning in my romance with the West.

Kalle Gustafsson

I don’t remember how I came across Gustafsson’s site, but the work is fantastic. I love the somewhat vintage, yet over-processed style on a lot of the fashion/beauty shoots. Also, check out the the Travel section.

The quality of this photo is total crap. I took it with my phone. And I love it, for some reason. Humor me.

Finally got around to taking some photos of the crazy office Andrew Hyde and I built. You can see the full set. I liked this particular shot for some reason.

Yes, I do draw on my desk with permanent marker. Also, you can see the photos I’m using for desktop backgrounds here and here.

An older photo taken on a photo walk in LoDo a couple years ago. I’ve always liked the perspective and the subtle wood-text in the concrete itself.
