Beautiful, but very sad peek into a documentary on someone’s dog.

As always, I’m a sucker for good info-graphics and good motion-graphics. Put the two together and you’ve really got me.
You have to watch this a couple times to really internalize some of the numbers. In particular, Facebook’s overall dominance is simply staggering.

Chilling and haunting, yet still beautiful. Shot with a 5d Mark II. Read more on Khalid’s Vimeo page.
I’ve had the pleasure of listening to The Autumn Film’s new album, “The Ship and The Sea”, for the last month or so as they’ve been finishing up final mixing and getting it in to mastering. They’re friends of mine, so this will probably sound biased, but I’m truly enjoying this album and excited to see other people hear it for the first time.
This song previewed in this video, Ships on the Ocean Floor is one of my favorites. You can also hear the first two songs off the album in their entirety over on The Sixty One.
I’m currently hard at work finishing up the artwork for the album packaging, which I’ll of course post here once it’s ready.
If you like what you hear, pre-order the album and help spread the word: theshipandthesea.com. The album is out on March 5th.
This is the first official music video for Jónsi’s new album. Just like Boy Lilikoi, the track he was giving away for a while, Go Do is simply gorgeous and fun. In a very non-EMI-like move, you can download the full video from the Vimeo page.
The album is out on April 6th.

Props to Joshua Blankenship for posting and thus reminding me of this amazing video. I don’t know when I first saw it, but I remember thinking it was one of the most captivating and haunting music videos I’d seen in a while. Unlike a lot of videos it enhanced the story of the song, Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars
The short film was produced & directed by Becky Fluke.
Joy Williams, one half of The Civil Wars duo (and I name I keep hearing more and more about) says this about the song:
“Poison & Wine is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love—that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. JP [John Paul White] and I are both married have been for several years now – and we got to talking one day about what a tug and pull our individual relationships can be. The longer you know someone—and the longer you allow someone to know you—the more the light and shadows inside each person become more vivid. This song was our attempt at being as brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known.“
(emphasis mine)
This short film is gorgeous. It follows Pete Billington, friend of filmmaker Landis Fields. The whole thing was shot on Canon SLR cameras: “The entire film was shot on 2 canon 7D’s (mostly at 60p for “slow-mo” flexibility later on while editing) and 1 Canon 5D at 30p which was conformed to a 24 frame timeline.” Crazy awesome.

This was pretty widely talked about last week, but worth posting for those that haven’t seen it yet. You may have seen my earlier link on Alex Roman and his incredibly realistic CGI work. This entire “film” isn’t real. It’s computer-generated. And incredibly stunning. I love the sound-design on it too.
If you’ve got a decent-sized screen, click-through to Vimeo and watch it in HD.
“HOME” – great (and funny) review by Garrett Murray of Google’s Nexus One.
Looks like one of the best Android OS phones to-date. I’ve only briefed played with any Android phone, but one of the things that bugs me, even just while watching the video: scrolling! It’s simply not as smooth and natural as the iPhone’s scrolling interaction and it seems other transitions and touch interactions follow a similar theme, unfortunately.

I’ve long been interested in special effects, digital compositing, CGI, etc. There’s something really fun about knowing how things have been pulled off.
At the same time, the film industry is getting so good, that I’m starting to find myself disappointed when I learn that a fairly benign scene (a.k.a. not obviously an f/x scene) wasn’t actually shot on location. It feels like cheating.
That said, this reel is amazing. You have to watch it closely to catch everything, but wow. And there’s some good background info on Stargate over at the Vimeo page.

I’m not sure I own much of anything made of leather. Maybe a belt or probably some shoes that have leather in them… After watching this gorgeous video on Billykirk I find myself wanting some finely-crafted, timeless, handmade pieces.

I love this ad/promo video for the Field Notes Colors subscription. I also love the notebooks, but as beautiful as the Colors sets look, can’t bring myself to pay for it. I just don’t go through that many notebooks in a year…

It’s Friday and this little diddy is super-fun, so why the hell not? Pear and the Beard have a medley of Will Smith-themed songs, and they made a nice little music video to go with it.

“A long journey in solitude searching for hope.
A film that communicates in a esthetic pictures poetry and emotion, to explore a new experience in Cinemato Graphy.”
I’m enamored with this short film by Robin RIsser. Shot in the Charente region of France, the locations are enchanting and varied. The “filming” was done on a Canon 5d Mark II, and the attention to detail is amazing.
I’m not even sure how to describe this epic music video. You just have to watch, full screen, with the sound on. Really well done.

Currently my favorite video on the internets. But, in all seriousness, it shouldn’t be this hard. It reminds me of the “good old days” when I had to deal with Quark’s customer service in the desktop publishing world for software activation. Wait, what? You don’t remember who Quark is? Huh. I’m sure their downfall had nothing to do with their lousy customer service… and that certainly won’t hurt Adobe either, in the long-run… Nah…

I caught this trailer on the idsgn blog where they have some more background info on the project by Erik Proulx. It looks like a powerful film.
The bulk of an entire big brand re-branding effort condensed into just a couple minutes. The work was done by London agency, Moving Brands. You can get some more info on the effort on the Swisscom site.
